If you're asking what are parabens and why should I be avoiding them, then you should keep reading. I was asking myself this same question and decided I should research. Most of my "good" products that say SLS-free also advertise "no parabens". Must be something to avoid then. I decided it's time to find out why!
Parabens are synthetic preservatives found in cosmetics, shampoos, moisturizers, even toothpaste. "Parabens"Â include methylparabens, ethylparabens, propylparabens, butylparabens and a host of others. The FDA has deemed these things safe, but do we always trust the FDA?!
First and foremost, if you have sensitive skin, you should cut out those parabens! Very few people are actually allergic to parabens, but they have been found to cause skin irritation and contact dermatitis. (A good friend's quest for "safe" sented soaps and lotions for her daughter with sensitive skin is another reason I started my paraben research)
Parabens have been found to disrupt the hormone system. They've also been found in the breast cancer tumors of 19 of 20 women! Remember that email that went around years ago about your deoderant causing breast cancer? Yup! Maybe not totally true, but a link has been noted. Anything that messes with hormones is worth avoiding at all costs!
So, there it is in a nutshell. Next time you're out looking for your health and beauty items remember to avoid sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate (but the sulfoacetate is okay) and anything that has "parabens". For makeup, I recommend E.L.F. mineral makeup. Affordable, safe and easy to use once you get the hang of it!
