But it says "no sugar added", it has to be better for the kids right? Not if you're trying to avoid chemical sugar substitutes. We all know to look out for aspartame and saccharin, but do you know about acesulfame potassium? Acesulfame potassium is also known as acesulfame K and Ace K.
Ace K has been approved by the FDA for use in baked goods, refrigerated goods, candies, sweetners and more since 1988. It is often used in combination with other artificial sweetners.
There is some controversy over the testing done. It is not known if Ace K can or will cause cancer or other diseases and issues. The CSPI (Center for Science in the Public Interest) has been pushing for more testing on Ace K since at least 1996.
For now, the safest artificial sugar is sucralose, otherwise known as Splenda. However being that it is artificial, I'd avoid it as much as possible. By "no sugar added", most companies only mean no real sugar added.
