How cool is this?! A grocery store with no packaging. So many things can't be or aren't recycled, packaging takes up space (and shipping weight), so of course, eliminating it is a wonderful idea. A couple of gyus in Austin, Texas aim to do just that. Their new grocery store, in.gredients, will sell 100% package-free products. Shoppers will need to be prepared to transport their goods home, but disposable bags (yuck!) and compostable containers will be available just in case. The store will sell all the same things you are accustomed to seeing in a grocery, with the exception of junk food and packaging.
Plans are to open the store in October 2011. I hope these guys succeed. I want to one day shop there!! And since moving to Texas, quite possibly Austin area, is high on my to do list, I might actually make it there 🙂 Check them out at their website- in.gredients.com
I recently saw some pieces on shows like CNN and the journal with Joan Lunden on PBS that were talking about issues and solutions for industrial recycling. This eliminates even having to have the conversation. There are cross contamination issues with allergies and bug issues to deal with but if this can be figured out, it could be a cool idea. If they came to LA I’d make it my go to.
